Kress Pavilion in Egg Harbor | Clare and Evan's Wedding

In his most recent podcast episode of the Anthropocene Reviewed, John Green reviewed sunsets.

“I think it's helpful to know how sunsets work and I've never bought the romantic notion that scientific understanding somehow robs the universe of its beauty, but it still doesn't communicate much about how breathtakingly beautiful sunsets are—not breathtakingly, actually, but breath-givingly beautiful.”

There were many other great lines in the episode (as you’d expect from a New York Times Best Selling Author), but this one especially hit home as I watched the sunset on Clare and Evan’s wedding day. I’ve seen a lot of sunsets in my years, but this particular one ranks in my top five of all time. In fact, it was so amazing that I’d trade all of next years sunsets for just one more like it; it was truly breath-givingly beautiful.

Some of you might know that my degree is in chemistry, and in my senior year I actually wrote a scientific paper about the colors of the sky. Despite being able to recite all the scattering properties that make a sunset possible, I never share these facts when I watch a sunset with my family and friends; I love learning about the world, but sometimes at the end of the day it’s more important to say nothing but “wow.”

Let’s play “Two Truths and a Lie.”

Not only did Evan and Clare start dating in early 2019, but they also married each other twice by the end of October.

Truth 1: Evan and Clare started dating in early 2019.

Truth 2: Evan and Clare married each other twice by the end of October.

Lie: I lied that there was a lie.

I apologize for deceiving you, but in my defense I didn’t think you’d believe the truth anyway. 2019 has been an absolute whirlwind of a year for Clare and Evan, and I’ve been staring at my computer for the last several hours trying to find the right words to describe it.

In terms of actual events they started dating, fell in love, discovered they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together, had a private legal wedding, moved to New York, planned a formal wedding in Door County, and said “I do” for a second time all within a single calendar.

But listing their year in chronological order doesn’t communicate much about how breathtakingly beautiful it was.

In fact, maybe Clare and Evan’s 2019 isn’t something I should try to communicate at all, but instead I should step back and just say “wow.”
